Ultimate Guide to Using a Whitening Kit for a Brighter Smile
Who doesn't want a radiant, whiter smile? Teeth whitening has grown in popularity over the years, and at Monread Dental, we offer take-home whitening kits that stand out for their effectiveness and ease of use. If you’ve been considering teeth whitening, here's a step-by-step guide to get the most out of the experience.
What is a Teeth Whitening Kit?
A whitening kit is a professional teeth whitening system designed to be used at home. Unlike some over-the-counter kits, Boutique Whitening is typically prescribed by dental professionals, making it both safe and highly effective. These IDA-approved kits come with specially formulated whitening gels that can deliver noticeable results in just a few days.
How Does it Work?
The whitening kit uses a peroxide-based gel to break down surface stains and discolouration on your teeth. Our custom made trays ensure that the gel stays in close contact with your teeth, maximising the whitening effect while minimising contact with your gums, which can lead to irritation.
3 -Step Guide to Teeth Whitening at Monread Dental
Free Consultation: Before starting any teeth whitening process, consult your dentist to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy. During your consultation, your dentist will scan your teeth using an intra-oral scanner to have our lab design your custom made mouth guards.
Once ready (usually 7-10 days), we will fit you in with your dentist again to make sure your mouth guards are fitting well. We will also provide you with the whitening gels on this visit.
Ready for use! See our Guide to using the kit below.
Step-by-Step Guide to Using the kit.
Clean Your Teeth Thoroughly: For best results, make sure your teeth are clean before applying the whitening gel. Brush your teeth thoroughly and floss to remove any food particles. The cleaner the surface of your teeth, the more effective the whitening gel will be.
Prepare the whitening tray: your custom mouth guard is designed to fit snugly around your teeth. Apply a small amount of the whitening gel into each tooth indent on the mouth guard (it is usually best to go from canine to canine on the top to prevent wastage on teeth that are not visible within the smile, and similar width on the bottom). Be sure not to overfill them to avoid overflow onto your gums, which can cause sensitivity.
Insert the Trays before going to sleep. Carefully place the trays over your teeth, making sure the gel is evenly distributed. Ensure the trays fit well and that there’s no excess gel oozing out. If there is, wipe it away to prevent irritation to your gums.
Wear the Trays for the Recommended Time: For the best results, our dentists recommend wearing the trays overnight and for consecutive nights (3-5 days) for maximum benefit, followed by similar periods without them in to avoid sensitivity. *Your dentist may recommend a longer or shorter time based on your needs. Make sure to follow the instructions to avoid over-whitening, which could lead to tooth sensitivity.
Remove the Trays and Clean Your Teeth
After the recommended time, remove the trays and rinse your mouth thoroughly to remove any residual gel. Brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean away any remaining whitening gel. Be cautious not to use an abrasive, hard-bristled toothbrush, as it may increase sensitivity to teeth and gums. We currently stock Curaprox super-soft tooth brushes, which come recommended by our dentists, please inquire at reception if you wish to purchase one!
Clean the Trays: Rinse the trays with cold water and use a toothbrush to clean any leftover gel. Store them in the provided case until your next use.
Tips for Maximising Your Results
Avoid staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and berries while whitening your teeth.
Stay consistent with your whitening routine. Skipping days can prolong the process.
Use sensitivity toothpaste if you notice any discomfort. Our Whitening Kits are designed to minimise sensitivity, but using a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth can provide extra relief if needed.
Rinse your mouth with water after eating or drinking to minimise stain buildup.
