The Importance of Rubber Dam Use in Modern Dentistry
At Monread Dental, patient comfort, safety, and treatment success are our top priorities. One of the tools that helps us achieve these goals - is the rubber dam. Despite its simplicity, the rubber dam plays a vital role in delivering precise, high quality dental care. But what exactly is a rubber dam, and why do we use it?
What is a Rubber Dam?
A rubber dam is a thin, flexible sheet - usually made of latex or a latex-free alternative that isolates one or more teeth during dental procedures. It’s held in place with small clamps and a frame, creating a clean, dry working area for the dentist while protecting the patient.
Why Do We Use It?
There are several reasons we use a rubber dam at Monread Dental, and all of them relate to better outcomes for our patients:
1. Improved Safety
Rubber dams act as a physical barrier, preventing debris, dental materials, or small instruments from being accidentally swallowed or inhaled.
2. Moisture Control
Many dental materials—such as those used in fillings or bonding—require a completely dry field to adhere properly. Saliva or moisture can compromise the quality and longevity of the work. The rubber dam keeps the area dry and clean, improving effectiveness of treatment.
3. Infection Control
In procedures like a root canal treatment, preventing contamination from bacteria in the saliva is crucial. Using a rubber dam creates a sterile environment, reducing the risk of post treatment infection and ensuring better healing.
4. Greater Comfort
While it may seem counterintuitive, many patients find the rubber dam makes their experience more comfortable. It keeps water and debris out of the mouth, reduces gagging, and minimises the sensation of instruments or materials near the back of the throat.
5. More Efficient Treatment
By creating a clear field of view and limiting distractions, the rubber dam allows our dental team to work more efficiently and with greater precision. That often means shorter treatment times and better results.
Common Procedures Where We Use Rubber Dams
Root Canal Treatment – Essential for maintaining a sterile field.
Composite Fillings – To ensure a strong, moisture-free bond.
Sealants and Bonding – For precision application.
Common Misconceptions
"Patients will find it uncomfortable" - many dentists assume the patient won’t be happy about the rubber dam, but it is all in the explanation. Explaining that the rubber dam is there to ensure they don’t swallow any pieces of the filling or old crown, to shield them from foul tastes, and to provide the isolation necessary for the procedure to be successful, will help them understand that although the rubber dam may be slightly uncomfortable to put on initially, the procedure will likely be more pleasant than without it!
"The treatment will take longer" - Having a rubber dam in place can make the procedure go more smoothly and can actually decrease chair time. After all, when something drips into a patient’s mouth, the dentist often needs to interrupt what they're doing to suction or rinse the material out. Using a rubber dam may reduce the need for suctioning or rinsing right in a critical phase of delivery or prep, avoiding interruptions & improving the overall result and patient experience.
